The square was first designed and built in 1934 by architect Genia Averbuch. In 1978, after many negotiations and to help ease congestion, architect Tsvi Lissar took over and elevated the square. The renowned and colorful “Fire and Water Fountain” which was created by artist Yaacov Agam, had once operated a fire and water show for many years. It eventually ended and all operations came to a halt until 2012 - when the fountain was restored and the blue benches around it were repainted.
